The Thanksgiving long weekend and the Mumbai terror attacks
The Thanksgiving long weekend has come with much needed escape from day to day work! Finally some time to catchup with old friends, books and really be thankful for all that is good about life- wonderful kids, family, friends, roof over our head and food on the table! To me this thanksgiving however has been different from previous years, a sad reminder that all is not well. I woke up to an intense media coverage around Mumbai terror attacks. The city has literally been under siege by terrorists. Although India is not new to the world of terrorism, this one has been unprecedented in its scope and depth- almost waking us up from our complacent slumber. All of a sudden you realize the threats from these misguided souls have not diminished a tiny bit.
The law enforcement agencies have to be right every single time in preventing these attacks whereas these terrorists have to be right just once every couple of months to wreck havoc. Clearly the odds are working against the protectors and in favor of the destroyers. What does this mean, we just continue to watch this as help less bystanders? We are already on a slippery path, every couple of months there is an attack ( Ahmedabad, Japiur, Delhi, and now Mumbai). This trend needs to be arrested pretty soon otherwise the confidence of the nation will go into a tailspin and deepen the economic misery of a country which is on the cusp of a new beginning. The IT revolution and the knowledge workers on whose strengths we have a resurgent India today can quickly fall back into the mediocrity of its past.
There is too much at stake, dreams of young Indians and old Indians alike which rides on the safety of this nation. Let us unite, learn the lessons, punish the guilty, hold government accountable of its action and inaction and move forward! I hope a new leadership will emerge in this country and address the problem head on. I hope a new security infrastructure would come into place where we can have far superior intelligence gathering and law enforcement to address the challenges posed by 21st century terrorism! I offer my prayers and condolences for the victims of this appalling and ghastly and disgusting terrorist attack!!
