During a recent visit to Circuit City on the Almaden Expressway and Blossom Hill Road intersection, San Jose, I was browsing for what could be a compelling buy for my gadget collection. I was particularly looking for next generation of ipods. The store was still carrying the old models, so I moved on to games section. The preparation was on for halo 3 release, but that is not my area, and my kids are too young for it. Moved on to the next aisle, that was the camera section. I was looking for accessories for my Nikon D-50 SLR. I saw the polarized filter and the UV filter. They caught my attention and I had them for a long time on my wish list. I grabbed them both. I later did some research on what exactly are they used for. The UV filter is used for photography on mountain tops to get rid of the bluish tint you can get in the picture (think snow capped whistler mountain ). I also read that the polarizing filter is used to capture flowing water, streams and I could easily see why I needed it. I have tried to capture wild salmon in Alaska rivers with my D-50, but the reflection from the water led to poor results. I am hoping with the new polarized filter, that is going to be a thing of the past.
Haven’t tried any of the filters yet, that is where the rubber meets the road! i will be putting this to test soon and see if it makes any difference. Actually one of the sources on internet advises its readers why put a $20 lens( UV filter) in front of $1000 SLR lens, hmm… I wonder!!
