A wikipedia killer by Google

28 July 2008

Google has just launched Knol – knol.google.com and I was made aware of it by couple of sources here and there. I was skeptical initially but decided to visit this new site and from what I can see, doesn’t look bad at all! I saw some health related articles on the home page and before I knew it, I was 60-70% through with this article by a seemingly reputed doctor! Hmm.. interesting. The community/peer review/rating process means the content would have an auto check and would rely on the wisdom of the crowd. Pretty much like wikipedia, but I have heard there are essential differences…must be.. Google has the habit of doing the old thing..only slightly better…besides the late comers too, some time, have an advantage..they learn from the mistakes of the early movers. I hope Knol will turn out better than wikipeida, competition is always a good thing, at least for the consumers! Ok, how is a knol different from a blog, you may ask. Not much difference really, onlly knol being more authoritative whereas the blog is casual. When you do a knol, the expectation is you will do citation, quote sources, be an authority in the field etc etc…Now that’s something for the creative types. I have already written my first knol, on a subject that is dear to me..I let the reader search for it and figure it out!
